Annotation

A scientific conference dedicated to the issues of biota mapping, as well as the memory of two prominent biogeographers — Alexey Vasilyevich Belov and Valery Fedorovich Lyamkin, was held on October 10–12, 2023 in Irkutsk at the Institute of Geography named after V. B. Sochava of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. At the conference, it was proposed to discuss theoretical and practical problems in the development of methods for mapping vegetation and animal populations, as well as remember the scientists who made a significant contribution to the development of this area of cartography not only in Siberia, but also throughout the country. In the plenary report “The history of the development of cartographic study of biota at the V. B. Sochava Institute of Geography” it was noted that methodological techniques and approaches of geobotanical and zoogeographic mapping were developed by V. B. Sochava, A.V. Belov, V. F. Lyamkin and L. P. Sokolova. A significant part of the reports at the conference was devoted to mapping the population of various animal groups. This note briefly describes works concerning geobotanical mapping. Scientists from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Ulan-Ude, Yalta, Minsk and other cities demonstrated their work in this direction, exchanged views on the use of traditional approaches and new technologies in the compilation of geobotanical maps.
