New data on the morphology of Stephanodiscus suzukii (Bacillariophyta)

Abstract

The study of new materials from Lake Biwa (Japan) has shown that the diatom Stephanodiscus suzukii has more variability of morphological features such as the diameter of vegetative and initial valves, the number of stria in 10 μm and the number of areolae at the end of the striae, location of marginal fultoportula. The initial valves have the number of central fultoportula exceeding several times their number on vegetative cells. An emended diagnosis of the species is presented.
