Annotation

Review of three “mire events” happened in August-September 2024 in Russia and Belarus is presented in brief.

The 7^th International Field Symposium: West Siberian Peatlands and Carbon Cycle: Past and Present (WSPCC 2024) aimed to promote a broad exchange of knowledge in the field of studying biodiversity, processes of bog formation and conservation of the biosphere functions of peat bogs and wetland forests, integrated environmental monitoring of bog ecosystems, the role of bogs in the global carbon cycle, as well as assessing the anthropogenic impact on the peat bogs functioning and issues of introducing modern technologies for low-carbon environmental management in the context of climate change. The Symposium was organized both in Khanty-Mansiysk and Beloyarsky towns in August 16–26, 2024.

Plenary sessions, breakout sessions and magnificent field excursions provided good experiences that allow discussing the main results of studying biodiversity and the functioning of bog ecosystems, modeling the processes of carbon exchange and peat accumulation, protection and reclamation of bogs, and the implementation of climate projects.

Scientific and practical seminar “Science in the service of territorial nature conservation: environmental, educational and social aspects” (Bezhanitsy, Pskov Oblast, Russia, August 16–17) was dedicated to the 30^th anniversary of the Polistovsky State Nature Reserve.

The fifth international seminar “Mire vegetation: modern problems of classification, mapping, use and protection” (Minsk–Domzheritsy, Belarus, September 16–20, 2024) took place in September 16–20, 2024 in Belarus, Minsk. It was organized by B. F. Kuprevich Institute of Experimental Botany National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. Apart from four days of scientific sessions, the participants went for a whole-day field excursion visiting the Berezinsky State Nature Reserve. Two beautiful autumn mires: sphagnum-rich pine bog and river valley fen were appreciated by mire specialists from Russia and Belarus. The visit-center of the Reserve offered the short lectures on nature, tourist attractions and prospective activities. All participants of the event were happy to be together, share the experiences and contribute to ecological education.
