Annotation

October 16, 2024 is the anniversary of our colleague Vladimir Nikolaevich Khramtsov, geobotanists-cartographer, senior researcher of the Laboratory of Geography and Cartography of Vegetation, a permanent member of the editorial board of the journal “Vegetation of Russia”.

After graduating from the Faculty of Geography of the Leningrad State University V. N. entered the postgraduate course of the V. L. Komarov Botanical Institute. Since then, V. N. has specialized in the study of arid and subarid vegetation, devoting several decades to this. He took an active part in the creation of a “Vegetation map of Kazakhstan and Central Asia (within the desert region)” and in collective monograph “Botanical Geography of Kazakhstan and Central Asia (within the desert region)”. In addition to his activity in Middle Asia, V.N. is known for his work in the steppes of Mongolia and his participation in the creation of the map “Ecosystems of Mongolia”.

In the late 1990s, most of the arid areas of the country became inaccessible for research, and V. N. gathered an interdisciplinary team for the purpose of inventory of natural complexes and their components in Leningrad region. As a result, more than 20 protected areas has been surveyed and justified. The results of comprehensive work on the nature of protected areas have been published in 11 collective monographs and the “Atlas of natural protected areas of St. Petersburg”. The idea of the atlas, the development of its content, design belongs to V. N.
