The Journal has been published since 1963.
The founder of Journal is the Komarov Botanical Institute Russian Academy of Sciences.
«Geobotanical mapping» is specialized national periodical that publishes the original and methodological articles on mapping the vegetation of Russia and other countries.
«Geobotanical Mapping» (an annual publication from 1963 to 1993, a serial publication since 1995, from 2019 ― a journal) is the only specialized periodical in Russia and worldwide that publishes original theoretical and methodological articles on the problems of vegetation mapping, botanical-geographical regionalization, representation of the spatial structure and dynamics of vegetation cover on maps, cartographic analysis, reviews of cartographic works, and literature reviews dedicated to vegetation mapping. Attention is also paid to issues concerning the use of GIS software packages and the interpretation of remote sensing data. It publishes color and black-and-white maps, complete versions of map legends, accompanied by explanatory text.
A well-known and authoritative publication in Russia and abroad is indexed in the bibliographic database Dimensions, Crossref, and the Russian Citation Index (RSCI) system
Past editors-in-chief of the edition include V.B. Sochava, T.I. Isachenko, S.A. Gribova, T.K. Yurkovskaya, I.N. Safronova.
